To experience the real London, you’ll need to leave the tourist trail behind. Here are our top six suggestions on how to do London like a Londoner.

Get your walking shoes on

You don’t need to get the tube everywhere! Did you know Holborn is just on the cusp of Covent Garden? And if you want to head to Shoreditch High Street but can’t get an easy connection onto the Overground, you can take a short walk from Liverpool Street or Old Street?

Many stations are only five minutes apart, so grab your umbrella and hit the ground running!

Stay away from the big hitters, and take a walk in the park

Of course, you’ll want to see the landmarks and top attractions, but to do London like a local, you’ll need to avoid Leicester Square and be ready to step outside Central London.

Richmond Park in West London is the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of London life and can be reached by train in around 20 minutes from Waterloo. And if you head to North London, Hampstead Heath offers spectacular views of the city.

Sample some street food

London is a great place to discover new food trends. Try street food markets such as Street Feast in Dalston and Shoreditch, and Leather Lane in Farringdon, where you can sample cuisine from all over the world. And you can’t be a true Londoner without trying a Sunday roast – the Cutty Sark Pub in Greenwich has some of the best traditional pub grub around.

Head East

If you want trendy bars and underground clubs, East London is the place to be. Hoxton, Dalston, and Shoreditch have some of the best nightlife in the city.

Night at the museum

Visit the museums, but after hours. Late night events at the V&A, British Library, Museum of London and even London Zoo, mean some of London’s top attractions can be enjoyed after hours, with a beer in hand.

Hit the markets, not Oxford Street

Londoners are a stylish bunch, and whilst the mighty Oxford Street will forever be a favourite, the locals unique sense of style comes from a mix of high street favourites and one off market finds. Head to Spitalfields market or Portobello Road market to get a sense of Londoners’ alternative style.
